On Monday, March 10, 2025, X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, experienced multiple outages affecting users worldwide. Reports of disruptions began around 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time, with outage tracking service Downdetector logging approximately 41,000 incidents by 10:00 a.m.
Elon Musk, owner of X, attributed these disruptions to a "massive cyberattack." He suggested that the attack was executed with substantial resources, potentially implicating a "large, coordinated group and/or a country."
Musk elaborated that while X faces daily cyber threats, the scale and coordination of this incident were unprecedented.
Users reported encountering continuous buffering and error messages during the outages. Some observed that the platform's issues coincided with protests against Musk's recent policy changes and his association with former President Donald Trump. However, no direct evidence has linked these events to the cyberattack.
This incident adds to a series of challenges X has faced since Musk's acquisition in 2022, including previous outages and technical issues. The platform's technical team is actively investigating the source of the attack to prevent future occurrences.
