Affirming Yourself

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Speaking positive life giving words to yourself sounds simple and easy at first. So simple that you question if it will actually work. Yet when you learn that the negativity that has been spoken into your life has already made a huge impact on why you landed where you are, you become willing to try just about anything. Why not try affirming yourself?

Hearing someone tell you to" love yourself" provokes a response of, "I already am" or "I do", in most. On deeper introspection, a few will find the truth. I realized this for myself after watching the video below. It does feel silly to look in the mirror and tell yourself those three simple words that are readily spoken to others in our life. The realization doesn't come until after you have tried it. As I stood in front of the mirror my first thought was, "who doesn't love themselves".

I am loving myself?

Look deeper into what love means. The actual definition of love is a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. I would like to add having compassion, forgiveness, understanding, longsuffering, kindness, and care as some of the qualities or character traits we look for. Unfortunately we recognize and freely give it to others, but we usually neglect to give to ourselves. The reality sets in when we take inventory of the lives we lead and claim to love.

The truth of how you affirm yourself is displayed in our daily lives. The people we associate with and how we allow ourselves to be treated. It is shown in the level of care we give ourselves each day whether it is physical, emotional, or mental health care. It also includes our financial care of ourselves. The decisions we make regarding ourselves are a reflection of the internal affirmations we have learned over time.

Speaking positively to yourself is a great way to start reprogramming some of the behaviors we learned to cope with. This may look different for everyone. I started with writing affirmations on my mirror and read them aloud each morning. I also added affirmations to the steps in my home with letter decals. There is no right or wrong way to affirm yourself, but it is important to do when there are so many negative influences around us in the world. To live this life victoriously, we need all the positive affirmations we can get!
